Appreciating Cosi Tabellini's unique pewter touchmarks

Cranfields has been representing Cosi Tabellini pewter for 30 years. Established in 1954, this family-run company handcrafts their wares in an artisanal workshop in Northern Italy. The quality of their pieces is simply unmatched.

On each Cosi Tabellini piece, you will find a series of the pewterers' touchmarks. These marks are equivalent to the hallmarks of gold or silver and show the origin of the piece, and guarantee their authenticity. Carefully stamped by the craftsman’s chisel in the latter stages of the pewter crafting process, the touchmarks deeply enhance the overall character of the object.

Exploring the meaning behind the markings on Cosi Tabellini's pewter pieces helps to learn the origins and history behind the product, adding to its value.

The Thistle

The thistle grows prolifically in the mountains near Cosi Tabellini’s workshop in Brescia. Early on, Cosi Tabellini’s co-founder Sergio Tabellini saw the plant as a symbol of beauty and grace, and commissioned his friend, renowned Brescian artist Antonio Stagnoli, to paint the thistle for the company’s logo. This symbol featured in early touchmarks and remains an emblem of Cosi Tabellini enduring quality.

CT

Another touchmark you’ll find on our pewter collection is the initials of the surnames of Cosi Tabellini’s two founders: Bruno Cosi and Sergio Tabellini. This touchmark has endured even now the family company has evolved into the third generation, with family members recognising the importance of maintaining the heritage and integrity of the products.

M

The ’M’ mark signifies Cosi Tabellini’s design collaboration with their partner Match Pewter, who have expanded the brand into the USA.

95

Cosi Tabellini’s quality pewter pieces contain a high tin content of around 95%, hence the ‘95’ imprint.

The Lion

Brescia has long been a centre of pewter production, and Cosi Tabellini recognises the importance of this heritage by including the traditional emblem of Brescia: the lion.

These touchmarks offer a window into the enduring quality and heritage of Cosi Tabellini’s beautiful pieces. They enhance the integrity and offer a reminder of the carefully handcrafted nature of their products. They come from a proud family of trained craftsmen who create these beautiful pieces that offer integrity and longevity.
